Thinking of a place to go to for a fun-filled, yet affordable marathon experience? The Laguna Phuket Marathon in Thailand is taking place for the 14th time this year and is well worth attending.
The organisers are expecting to receive more than 13,000 runners from over 50 countries at the race weekend, which will take place from 8-9th June 2019 at the Laguna Phuket resort. The event has a highly varied international feel, with more than 80 per cent of the runners coming from outside of Phuket annually.
While children as young as three years old attend the Kids’ Dash, the sharp end of the field is also one of serious business, as the marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, is professionally timed by Sportstats Asia, and is certified by AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races).
The island of Phuket is a world-class tourism destination, and last year it welcomed more than nine million arrivals through Phuket International Airport in 2018. More than just a regular resort island, the year-round balmy weather also sees it as one of the top hosts for mass participation sporting events in the region.
A predictably popular approach is for the participants to arrive either a couple of days early, or stay on for the week after the marathon to extend their vacations, so getting your hotel booking sorted early is a good idea.
The Laguna Phuket Marathon is more than a sports event, and it supports many local communities including the Laguna Phuket Foundation's Children First Fund. This year, the event is supporting the UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) for the first time as well.
Laguna Phuket Marathon 2019 offers six distances: 2 km Kids Run, 5 km and 10.5 km will take place on Saturday 8th June in the afternoon while the Half Marathon (21.0975 km), Marathon (42.195 km) and Marathon Relay (42.195 km) will take place on Sunday 9th June in the morning.
