Sony’s XB50BS Extra Bass Sports Bluetooth In-ear Headphones is one that sets out to blast your eardrums with its excellent bass for active music enthusiasts. Like many headphones out in the market today, these feature Bluetooth wireless connectivity, allowing you to work out to the beat without dealing with a dangling wire.
Marrying the gap for splash proof earphones and a better, more secure in-ear hook, fitness enthusiasts can now groove to their favourite tunes with ease regardless of the sport they are engaged in. A seven-hour battery life ensures that it will play through your daily commute, as well as a full marathon.
In use, the emphasised bass beats made it easy to go with the flow of your chosen playlist, and the noise isolation is moderately effective, letting you hear the music but still be reasonably aware of your surroundings.
However, wearing the headphones for long periods of time can get uncomfortable. While the in-ear hooks secures your headphones during activity, comfort is compromised when wearing it for long periods of time.
Unlike a Sony Walkman with a built-in player and storage space, the XB50BS is only a wireless headphone so still requires a transmitter in the form of your smartphone. Runners who do not like training with their phones may find this a deal breaker. But for gym goers and treadmill users, you can easily leave the phone nearby and there is plenty of range to connect the device. We do like the lightweight nature of the unit, and there is decent battery life too.
Like all sport orientated headphones, it’s not the last word in fine audio detail, but the wireless, compact design makes it easy to carry around every day.
