Just one week on 2020 and you may or may not have already forgotten your new year’s resolutions, but we are here to help and motivate you along anyway! Getting fitter, losing weight, and feeling healthier typically top the wish lists of many people, so here are three easy-to-achieve suggestions on how to get moving, or keep moving.
1. Sign up for a Race
This may be blindingly obvious, but for newbies, getting that first race in, even if it’s a 5km Fun Run, is a great motivator to keep going. If you’re already a 10km race regular, maybe it’s time to move up to a half-marathon.
Regular runners will tell you that once you have a date and race fees laid down, it really gets you moving. They give you a goal, and people need goals to actively move forwards.
2. Do Something New
Besides running on the road, that is.
If a multi-sport event sounds too daunting, how about a short trail race or another sport that can offer something fresh to your routine? If you don't enjoy running in organised races, you can always try some new running routes. If you regularly run around your home, how about exploring routes around the office, either before or after work? Or even join a social running group if you normally run alone!
3. Work on Your Weakness
Struggle to run uphill? Back away from your usual 5km route and start hill or stair-climbing.
Lousy at anaerobic activity? Take some time out of your already-proven aerobic base to work on that.
With baby steps, you will be much stronger at your weak areas after a couple of months and could even turn them to strengths. If you’re just starting out running after years of inactivity, trying to blast through 10km in one session is just going to demotivate you. Look up some beginner-friendly training plans, and pace yourself to improve gradually.
