Running is a great sport because you can do it wherever and whenever you want. However, during casual runs, when you are running on roads and trails that are regularly shared by other people, you have to remember that you are still in public, and being a healthy individual does not excuse you from being an unknowingly ignorant person.
Here are some tips you should remember when you’re running in public and have to share the area with other people.
To The Left, To The Left
When running on a path crowded with people, keep to one side so you will not block any other people who may be using the path, such as tourists, small children, cats and dogs even. Like driving, slower traffic need to keep to the leftmost lane.
A Fellow Runner Is Not Your Competitor
It’s great to see a fellow runner on the path. However that also means they are running at their own pace. It is not comforting for anyone to run faster than the other runner in a bid to keep up or run past the other person and in front of them. It’s just annoying. Don’t be annoying.
Don’t Throw Unsolicited Comments To Others
Remember, as much as you want to cheer, comment or scoff at your fellow runners on when you encounter them on the path, some of them may not appreciate any comments you make. Honestly, runners run to be alone and be free. If they are running alone, try not to engage them in conversation. If it’s someone you recognise, smile or wave, but let them keep running unless they stop to say hi, and even then, keep left.
