Do not run with noise blocking earpieces in your ears.
While the roads are quiet, blocking yourself off with walls of music will only be detrimental to your safety. If you want to run with music, run with one earpiece in an ear, or have them loose fitting and keep the volume low for better situational awareness.
Keep your phone with you.
Your phone may seem clumsy for any sort of use when running, but you should keep it with you. From using it as a flashlight to guide your way out of tight spots to getting emergency services as quickly as possible, the phone will be an asset to you when you run at night. Wear it on a carrier around your arm or waist for easier movement.
Take a whistle with you.
In case you wish to get the attention of nearby passers-by, or if for some reason your phone does not work, blowing on the whistle to make a racket will get you the attention that you need immediately and as quickly as possible.
Run in well-lit areas.
Quiet does not mean safe. Rather, it can mean dark shadows and people hiding to attack. Run in areas that are not only well-lit but also near places with human contact.
Remember: S-I-N-G.
Should, god forbid, you get grabbed from behind by someone, practice the following moves: an elbow to the Solar Plexus (S), a crunching stomp on the Instep of the foot (I), a fast punch to the Nose (N) and any well-placed hits to the groin area (G). These parts are considered the most sensitive parts of any body and are the parts to hit to get away from anyone who tries to attack you.
