BY In 2017, New Balance revealed its first FuelCell running shoe to the world and runners everywhere were amazed by its durability and consistency. Designed through real-world, athlete-driven data, refined in the lab and then tested in racing, the super responsive midsole foam that the shoe was built around comprises of a specially formulated, nitrogen-infused TPU foam. Lab tests show that the material delivers a rebound rate of around 55%, making it one of the most efficient midsole materials to be found in a running shoe.

FuelCell 5280 – The All-Out Racer
If competition speed is what you need, the FuelCell 5280 (S$299) is your perfect partner. The high-rebound FuelCell midsole foam is paired with a shaped carbon fibre plate that is designed to flex then stiffen for superior propulsion, while a Hypoknit upper provides lightweight support in precise areas. Engineered alongside a select group of Team NB’s world-class athletes for competitive distances up to 5km, this is the speediest cushioned running shoe in the New Balance lineup this season. FuelCell Propel – The Easy Running, Multi-Purpose shoe
Designed for both the experienced long distance runner and those just starting out, the FuelCell Propel (S$159)covers both ends of the spectrum by packing plenty of energy return into every step. The FuelCell foam offers beginner-friendly cushioning and consistency over long distances. A lightweight solid rubber and NDurance outsole provides excellent durability. The FuelCell Propel is excellent all-rounder that also serves as an excellent piece of urban fashion.
FuelCell Rebel – From Serious Training to Full Marathon Distances
Tempo workouts and runners that favour a fast moving mid or forefoot strike will find the FuelCell Rebel (S$179) to be the perfect training and racing partner.Lightweight with an optimal energy return in each step, it is tuned to be comfortable so that you’ll always feel confidently connected to the road surface. The outsole tread pattern is tailored to give all direction grip and traction to mid and forefoot strikers, and the Jacquard-weave uppers keeps things cool and supportive.
FuelCell Echo – The Casual, Stylish, Urban Runner
When you want to be fast on race days and stylish for all the times in between, the FuelCell Echo (S$149)comes up to lift your game and panache. The low 6mm offset helps you stay comfortable whenever you have to be on your feet for long periods, and is also favoured by high cadence runners. The full-length FuelCell midsole has a lower profile but still plenty of cushioning, and the streamlined silhouette is pretty sleek. Stay confident with the TPU heel counter that ensures the shoe stays fitted to your feet with every step.
FuelCell Echolucent – High Efficiency, Long Distance Speed
The completely new FuelCell Echolucent is made to take to the quick streets in total head-turning style. A 6mm offset with a supportive full-length FuelCell midsole give you consistent cushioning and energy return that won’t let you down on race day and during long training runs. The translucent, multi-layered uppers really make the Echolucent stand out from the crowd, but still allow for lots of airflow to help you stay cool.
