Hong Kong has always been likened to Singapore for its fast-paced environment and the variety of food it has to offer. I’ve only been to Hong Kong twice before and on those visits, I visited Hong Kong’s famous attractions and went on a sumptuous food trail. I have never explored Hong Kong beyond the city.
This time around, I was determined to see a different side of Hong Kong, so I chose to go for a hike on the Dragon’s Back Trail.
It took me a little more than an hour to get to the start of the trail with the crazy Sunday crowd. We had to queue in long lines at the bus interchange before we managed to get onto one. Thankfully, the bus brought us to the start of the trail so no time was wasted from there.
I started out strong. However, as I proceeded, I grew apprehensive as there seem to be a queue to get up to the top. This was the first time I had ever needed to queue my way up a mountain! This was aggravating: The sun was beating down hard on me and still I had to line up behind others to get to the peak?
There wasn’t a way down. The only way was up and climbing up seemed like a really long journey.
As I approached mid-way through the trail, I realised the queue was due to an emergency situation concerning an elderly person and a helicopter rescue mission. Reasoning understood, we all waited patiently and soon after, the climb up was pretty smooth. Definitely an easy ascent for most seeing that I saw elderly hikers and even hikers bringing infants and toddlers on the route.
At its peak, I was rewarded with a panoramic view of Shek O and Tai Long Wan. For the more adventurous, taking another 2-hour trail would bring you to Shek O Beach. However, I skipped out on it due to the crowd and took the direct route back down.
Nevertheless, hiking up Dragon’s Back was the highlight of my trip and I will strongly recommend spending some time here, especially for someone looking for a short hike, away from the bustling Hong Kong streets.
Third time’s the charm, yeah?
Hi. Can share how to get to the trail starting point?
Hi Joe,
Board bus number 9 from Shau Kei Wan MTR Station’s Exit A3 at the bus interchange. Alight at To Tei Wan bus stop. The bus stop is right in front of the trail.
