adidas Ultraboost 5: Our Favourite Bit

Standfirst: Our highlights from running in the new adidas Ultraboost 5

The first time I slipped on a pair of adidas Ultraboost was in 2020. I loved just how well it looked, how snug it fit, and how my feet felt wearing them.

It was as pleasantly effortless to run in as it was to style, and I clocked some 400km in the pair before retiring it. The best part? The shoes achieved all that distance without too much wear on the outsole and upper. That early experience set a high benchmark for the new Ultraboost 5 you see here, and we wasted no time in slipping it on and putting it through its paces. Here are five highlights in the new shoe which stood out:

Bold Good Look

That white upper, base grey midsole with expressive shades of ‘Spark Orange’ and ‘Lucid Pink’ drew plenty of approving glances. If you noticed the adidas sponsored athletes at the recent Olympics, you’d notice them wearing the same shoes, in this colourway too!

As one of the pioneers of athleisure, we’d expect no less from the new Ultraboost 5, complete with a sharp eye-catching silhouette that shines on both action and leisure fronts.

More Boost, Less Weight

The original Ultraboost was comfortable and cushioned over mid distance runs spanning five to 10kms. In the Ultraboost 5, those attributes are enhanced with 9mm more boost foam midsole spanning the forefoot and heel, with less weight.

Right from the first toe-off, the shoe certainly felt light, responsive and cushioned, with the new re-engineered Light Boost midsole capable of keeping pace with a wide variety of runs.

We enjoyed the shoe’s sprightly nature, with some pop to establish and maintain momentum over a range of efforts. Adidas says the shoe’s energy return is now 2 per cent better, but what we know for sure, is that it feels as lively, reliable and assured as we remembered it.

Stable On The Go

The presence of a torsion bar under the midfoot has made a noticeable difference in the performance of the Ultraboost 5. Spread out under the arch support, it offers a nice level of support with each footfall, with each stride enjoyably smooth and stable.

Snug, like a Sock

The new re-engineered Primeknit upper has been designed to adapted to its wearer’s foot with a snug fit. Slipping it on, my feet feel nicely cradled with no slippage or irritation.

The upper is developed for improved breathability, but we live in notoriously hot and humid Singapore. I found that heat does build up for me when running along distance during a hot afternoon, which makes thinner socks crucial in solving that issue.

Grippy All Over

Shod with a Continental rubber outsole, the Ultraboost 5 offers excellent grip and traction over a wide range of surfaces. This allowed us to confidently take sharp turns and crank up the pace to meet performance targets without worrying about traction or instability.

The Last Word

Anyone looking for a single shoe that’s versatile enough to see them through a day out, a workout in the gym or a run out will be loving the new Ultraboost 5. We rate it as a reliable go-to trainer for active lifestyles. Priced at $259, the adidas Ultraboost 5 is available at adidas stores or online at www.adidas.com.sg/ultraboost
