Vietnam is quickly rising up the charts as one of the preferred Asian countries to host a regional triathlon, and the next major event is the Techcombank Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championship. 2019 also marks the fifth consecutive year that an Ironman 70.3 race is being hosted in Vietnam.
The event is taking place on 12th May 2019 in Da Nang. 2100 participants, including 30 pro athletes, are expected to compete at this year’s race. Patrick Lange, the 2017 and 2018 Men’s Ironman World Champion, will be among the pro competitors attending.
The race is a qualifying round for the 2019 Ironman 70.3 World Championship, scheduled to be held on September 7th and 8th in Nice, France.
What’s amazing is that Vietnam is quickly getting used to the idea of hosting, and participating, in triathlons. Vietnamese participation in the Ironman 70.3 has increased by more than ten times since the first race in 2015. This year’s competition has already confirmed the entry of just over 1000 Vietnamese participants across the various categories.
This rise in numbers is partially attributed to the support from Giant International – the exclusive distributor of Giant bicycles in Vietnam. The distributor has a bicycle rental program for the 2019 Ironman 70.3 Vietnam, providing participants from Vietnam and abroad with the opportunity to rent a quality road bicycle for race day.
The buildup towards the Ironman 70.3 begins in Da Nang with Race Week from 9th to 12th May. During this time a number of smaller scale races will be taking place. These include the Sunrise Sprint, a swim-bike-run event consisting of a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run.
The Sunrise Sprint is now in its third year, and consists of a swim-bike-run race with a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run. The event is a multi-sport endurance race open to new competitors and triathlon enthusiasts as well as anyone looking to push their boundaries
The Ironkids Aquathlon and Ironkids triathlon are also being held during the week.
