The Right Shoe for the Right Occasion

What are the factors to consider when buying a running shoe?

RUN SINGAPORE BY | UPDATED 8 YEARS AGO

Hands up, those of you who buy running shoes based on colour and design. While it is vital to look sartorially coordinated, it is even more important to get a pair of shoes that suits your needs and preferences.

“Choosing your shoes wisely should be a priority for all athletes serious about their performance and remaining injury free,” advises Ben Pulham, founder of Coached, a holistic online training programme. “When selecting a shoe, it is important to consider a number of factors including foot type, fit, comfort, race type and race duration to ensure you find a shoe that suits your unique biomechanics and the demands of the events you're training for.”

Biomechanics should be looked at by an expert if you are unsure. But fret not, as there are many gait analysis services currently available in Singapore.

On the other hand, ‘demand’ is something that you should know or at least, have something in mind. To help you match the correct shoe with your demands, Under Armour has created three shoe categories - RUN Long, RUN Strong and RUN Fast - that are pretty much self-explanatory.

RUN Long

Shoes in the RUN Long category facilitate lengthier training or recovery runs. The shoes have extra cushioning to help you get through the extra miles. For instance, the Charged Bandit 2 (pictured above) features the two-piece Charged Cushioning® midsole is firmer below the heel and softer below the forefoot for a blend of support and comfort that’s built to perform. The Gemini 2’s dual-layer midsole combines Charged Cushioning on top of Micro G foam for the ultimate blend of cushioned support and explosive responsiveness.

RUN Strong

Shoes in the RUN Strong category are made to withstand intense workout sessions, be it intervals, hills runs or callisthenics. Shoes include the Speedform Fortis 2 (pictured above), which provides a perfect blend of stability and cushioning. The Velocity Micro G has Full-length Micro G foam turns cushioned landings into explosive takeoffs.

RUN Fast

You’re all prepared and ready for the race. RUN Fast shoes help you break PBs and perform to your optimum level when it matters most. Shoes in this category are lightweight and have a low, aerodynamic profile. They include the Speedform Apollo 2 (pictured above), which weighs about 226g. The Slingshot is even lighter, at 212g.
