3 Ways to Beat the Humidity in Singapore

Stop whining and start running

Living in a tropical country like Singapore, we are faced with hot and humid weather all year round. Coupled with the seemingly annual tradition of transboundary haze, many people consider that Singapore is simply too warm to run long distances in.

But nothing can stop us! If you’ve just moved to Singapore or are looking for excuses to start training seriously, here are three tips to help you along.

Buy the right running outfit

While we agree that cotton t-shirts are the comfiest, it isn’t the best material to run in. Do not discount the weight from a sweat-soaked t-shirt. It slows you down. Instead, grab a nearly weightless synthetic fabric top that is suitable for running in warm climates. You might find yourself running a tad faster than before.

Stay hydrated

Pretty sure many of you have come across someone who said, “I can’t drink before I run. I will get a cramp later.” This is true. Our bodies differ from person to person and so does your drinking requirements. Nonetheless, it is important to keep your body hydrated to prevent fatigue, headache, heatstroke and other related illnesses. Either hydrate properly an hour before heading out, or drink small amounts throughout the session.

Choose the best time

More often than not, the sun shines the brightest at noon. This means that it is the warmest time of the day to go for a run. While planning for a run, take into consideration of the amount of time you are dedicating to it. If you are planning to be out for four hours, starting your run at 9am in the morning doesn’t allow you to run in optimal condition.

With these few tips in your bag now, it’s time to head on out!
